Let There Be Light

Follow up to the post Diablo III Not Dark Enough? over at MTV Muliplayer they received a response to the petition directed towards the new art style in Diablo III.

So this is what Lee had to say about the art direction when we spoke in Paris: “One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for ‘Diablo III’ is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in ‘Lord of the Rings’ — not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn’t allow you to have a lot of contrast.”

Diablo III Not Dark Enough?

Without citing sources which are plenty, especially on Diablo III forums, there is a uproar with the current art direction. I can understand cause the darkest most evil series Blizzard has ever done is not getting darker or more evil. If anything it is getting lighter and a little more cartoon like, and while many believe that is a bad thing, I agree with them.

Diablo III however is not going in that direction, and you might say “Josh how do you know that?” and I say the answer is simple.

This is our first look into the new Diablo III universe and I doubt that what we see will make it into the final product as we saw it. I also think Blizzard will listen to their fans and make this game as dark and evil as possible to stay true to the feelings of the previous games. Models when they are first developed can have a soft look to them before final details are added. My final reason is my favorite, it is cause we are not looking at the worst the Diabo III has to deliver to us, cause I saw a castle and a field slash jungle area which was far from the hell you are bound to experience after the game plot picks up when it releases.

So lighten up and don’t worry so much guys! Look forward to the last announcement Blizzard is going to make! I cannot wait.
